What is IPL?

If you feel embarrassed about how your skin looks because of sun damage or dark spots, Mountain Med Spa can perform a skin analysis to determine if you benefit from intense pulsed light therapy (IPL). An IPL photofacial is a rejuvenating skin treatment for adult women and men who suffer from hyperpigmentation issues on their face and neck. Even though a photofacial is a noninvasive procedure, it still creates effective and impressive results. During the procedure, Dr. Rock Navarkal sends intense pulses of light that raise the temperature of the skin cells, which encourages the natural healing process and stimulates collagen production. The increased production of collagen will encourage healthier-looking skin and a more even skin tone.

What Are the Benefits of IPL?

IPL photofacials are popular at Mountain Med Spa for their rejuvenating qualities. Some of the benefits that our Denver, CO patients gain from their IPL facials include:

  • Improved skin tone and texture
  • A balancing of pigment and brown spots
  • Revitalized, transformed skin aesthetic
  • A soothing, spa-like procedure that boosts skin radiance

Is An IPL Treatment For You?

To improve certain complexion problems, like sun spots and brown lesions, IPL is a noninvasive treatment that reaches deep into the layers of your skin. Candidates for an IPL photofacial may have a combination of concerns with their complexion, such as rosacea, sun damage, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), rough texture, large pores, flushing, freckles, age and sun spots, or broken capillaries. During your private consultation, Dr. Navarkal will assess your skin to determine if you benefit from IPL treatments.

What Happens During IPL Treatment?

We will start by completing a thorough consultation to assess your skin, discuss your concerns, determine if the procedure is right for you, and develop a treatment plan. In a private treatment room, we will gently glide the photofacial device over the treatment area while it emits light energy pulses. Before you leave, our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and explain certain side effects you may experience, such as redness and swelling. Patients can resume their day without any required recovery time.

What to Expect After IPL Treatment

Your symptoms will subside within several hours. If you'd like, you can conceal them with makeup. To minimize irritation and promote healing, Mountain Med Spa strongly encourages you to use lotion on the treatment area. We will provide recommendations on what to use. Also, patients can use over-the-counter, anti-inflammatory medicine to reduce any discomfort. Over the next several days, the blemishes under the skin will come to the surface and start to flake away. Patients should wear sunscreen and avoid picking at the flaking skin. While you will see improvements after the first session, your skin will attain the best results following multiple IPL appointments. At Mountain Med Spa, Dr. Navarkal recommends 3 – 6 treatments scheduled about once a month.

IPL FAQ

How much does IPL cost?
Your skin is unique, so the cost of IPL treatments will depend on your goals. Mountain Med Spa offers special deals sometimes, and we accept several payment methods. During your initial consultation, your technician can help estimate costs and determine the number of treatments needed to match your goals.

How quick are the results from IPL?
Some results can be seen following each IPL treatment, but optimal results can be seen around one month after all of your treatments are complete. It is normal for your skin to respond differently to every session. You will see fading of blotchiness, redness, sunspots, and age spots.

What are the possible side effects of IPL?
It's common to have mild side effects like temporary redness, swelling, bruising, blisters, or crusting. These should go away on their own within a day or two after the procedure. Your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun, and sun exposure will negatively impact your results. Whenever you go outside, you should always wear sunscreen to avoid issues like redness and spots.

Do I need to prep for IPL?
To prepare for an IPL treatment, patients are usually asked to avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for about 2 – 4 weeks prior to the appointment. You might need to stop using certain medications and topical creams, like Retin-A, a few days before each treatment and may be asked to take ibuprofen or aspirin one week before the appointment to help prevent bruising. You also need to protect the treated areas with sunscreen between sessions.

Why should I get multiple IPL sessions?
Multiple IPL sessions are better to produce gradual, natural-looking improvements to your skin. Every treatment helps to diminish spots and other surface irregularities. Several treatments also produce longer-lasting results.
